Lahore: In line with the decision taken by the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the first instalment to construct temporary housing facility has been handed over to all families whose lands had been acquired in Thor Valley for construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam Project (DBDP).
WAPDA General Manager (Land Acquisition and Resettlement) Dr. Raheel Ahmad Siddiqui and General Manager (DBDP) Shaukat Hussain Bhatti delivered the cheques to the families in Thor Valley of Diamer district in Gilgit Baltistan.
In a major departure from existing practice in land acquisition and resettlement, WAPDA in its meeting held on February 21, decided to provide temporary housing facilities to all affected families in Thor Valley.
The provision of temporary accommodation, in accordance with the weather requirements of the area, is in addition to the full payment for the land and establishment of permanent townships in five years. The amount to each family for construction of alternate accommodation comprising a bedroom along with toilet, is being released in three instalments.
Besides, giving away cheques to the affectees, WAPDA also set up a 3-day medical camp to provide free medical coverage to the families in far-flung areas of Thor and Thurli valleys. A team of WAPDA doctors comprising physician, general surgeon, eye specialist and child specialist checked up some 926 patients – 80% of whom were women and children. During the camp, medicines were provided free-of-the-cost to the patients in addition to carrying out minor operative procedures.
In yet another significant development, construction of the first-ever primary school for girls in Chillas has also been started. The school, to be attached with a mosque and run by the locals themselves, will provide general as well as religious education to girls in the area.
As a goodwill gesture, WAPDA also plans to establish veterinary camps in different valleys of Diamer district by the end of March.
