Islamabad: A meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan under the Chairmanship of Mr. Justice (R) Riaz Kayani, Honourable Member, Election Commission was held today on 5th August 2011 with NADRA authorities.
Mr. Justice ® Shahzad Akbar and Mr. Justice ® Fazal-ur-Rehman were also present. The Chairman NADRA, Mr. Ali Arshad Hakeem informed about printing of draft Electoral Rolls by NADRA to be used for country wide door to door verification exercise and its delivery at district level. He also highlighted some practical problems which hindered the gigantic task of printing of more than 80 million voters and delivery of Draft Electoral Rolls in time and requested for extension of timeline earlier decided by the Election Commission.
The Election Commission of Pakistan keeping in view the magnitude of the work and adverse law and order situation in some parts of Karachi and Balochistan as well as the requests from Teachers’ Associations across the country for postponing the verification exercise after the holy month of Ramadan, granted extension in time to NADRA to print and deliver the Draft Electoral Rolls till 17th August 2011 and allowed the commencement of door-t-door exercise by the field offices from 22nd August 2011 till 30th September 2011.
Mr. Justice ® Riaz Kayani directed that no further extension in the time would be permitted and in case of any delay, responsibility will be fixed on the Department concerned.
The meeting was also attended by all the four Provincial Election Commissioner besides Census Commissioner, Habib Ullah Khattak; Deputy Chairman NADRA, Tariq Malik, GM (Project) Mr. Gohar Marwat, Deputy Project Director Faisal Khan and all the Joint Secretaries of ECP.
Secretary ECP, Mr. Ishtiak Ahmad Khan appreciated all good work done by ECP’s election, budget and training wing including NADRA and Printing Corporation of Pakistan.
Mr. Gohar Marwat briefed the meeting regarding printing work and informed that distribution of printed material to the 141 registration officers at district level is halfway through and by the August 17th, 2011, Draft Electoral Rolls will reach its destination, Mr. Gohar assured.
The meeting was also informed that training of 2, 11,000 verifying officials and supervisors would be completed by this weekend.
At the end of the meeting, a presentation for public awareness campaign, to be launched by the ECP regarding voters’ registration process, was presented to all the Provincial Election Commissioners for obtaining their views and suggestions.
