Islamabad: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo said that Gilgit-Baltistan Council and Government are working according to the mandate of Gilgit-Baltistan Self Governance and Empowerment Order 2009. He said this in a high level meeting in Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Governor Gilgit-Baltistan, Pir Karam Ali Shah, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah, Gilgit-Baltistan Minister of Law, Engineer Usman Khan, Secretary Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan and Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan and other members of Gilgit-Baltistan Council also attended the meeting.
While talking to the participants of the meeting Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo said that we have to work according to Gilgit-Baltistan Self Governance and Empowerment Order 2009, which is drafted with the consensus of all stake holders and is approved by the Parliament of Pakistan. The Minister agreed to the proposal that the session of the council to held up 50 days a year and the process of legislation be made more effective.
He also appreciated the proposal for the training of new members of the council. Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo said that Hydel Power and Minerals Resources, Forests and Tourism are the subjects of Gilgit-Baltistan Council and Council is responsible for legislation on these subjects and the development of the sectors.
“It will be a great service to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, if could be able to take some concrete measures for the development of these sectors”, the Minister maintained. Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo emphasized the increase of bilateral trade with China and development of Industrial Zone in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The meeting also discussed the introduction of Tax system in Gilgit-Baltistan and it was decided that the Tax rate in the region will be half of that in the rest of the country. Further the limit for minimum taxable income will also be higher for Gilgit-Baltistan.
Next meeting in this connection will be held on Friday, September 30, 2011 in which final decision will be taken on these proposals.
