Karachi: Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan has said that achievements in the war against terror were attributable to the joint Pak-US operations. He maintained that after so many years of suffering from terrorists’ attacks and giving immense sacrifices it was unjust to accuse Pakistan of supporting a proxy war. He was speaking on the occasion of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI)’s Annual Dinner here on Saturday.
Asserting that peace and security was of paramount importance for business community, the governor maintained that law and order situation might deteriorate if not con-trolled appropriately: “The term ‘target killing’ is a new phenomenon that emerged some three years ago.
Culmination was when many people were kidnapped in the evening of 17th of August this year – from various areas of Karachi – brutally tortured and killed. Their dead bodies were recovered after a few hours of abduction. These were innocent poor people with no affiliation with any political party”.
Reiterating that the President and the Prime Minister had taken the political leadership into confidence, Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan stated that all the parties had reassured of government of political will for the sake of peace. MQM leader Altaf Hussain was in constant touch with the leadership.
Governor gave credit to Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Provincial Home Minister Manzoor Wassan and Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah for their contribution towards improvement in the Metropolis’ law and order situation. He further stated that Manzoor Wassan had to handle a mess created over many years.
Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan pointed out that dynamics and population composition of Karachi was different from other cities of Pakistan. He said that being the economic hub that generated 70% of the revenue, this city also attracted organized criminals who tried to exploit grey areas in a very sophisticated way. Observing that there was no mechanism to filter criminals from entering the political parties he said that a crime remained an individual act of a criminal until supported by the party.
Speaking about recent floods Dr. Ebad pointed out that last year’s deluge was caused by the rivers and thus the destruction had a pattern. But the current inundation was due to the rains that had devastated 19-20 districts out of 23.
He informed that thirteen districts were colossally affected where shelter-less and hungry populace were facing deadly diseases. He informed that the President was monitoring the flood relief efforts through Video Conferencing System established last year, with headquarters in CM House and Governor House, enabling 21-22 districts to interact.
Governor said that not all grievances of business community had been resolved yet many problems were addressed. He reminded of former Mayor Mustafa Kamal’s ser-vices towards improvement of infrastructure. Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khoro asserted: “Present action in Karachi is the result of collective wisdom – nobody is complaining against the operation and arrests.
