Islamabad, November 30, 2012 (PPI-OT): WWF-Pakistan’s Green Office Initiative (GOI) team visited Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry for giving awareness about Green Office which is a practical environmental program designed especially for offices.
The team comprising of Mrs.Lubna Farooq, CEO, De Goodar Shirkat SMC (Pvt) Ltd, Mr.Rizwan Mehmood, Manager, GOI and Ms.Nazifa Butt, Senior Program Officer, GOI highlighted the objects of Green Office Initiative and said it reduces the consumption of the natural resources by improving offices’ environmental efficiency.
During a Presentation, Ms.Nazifa Butt said that Green Office is suitable for both small and large offices in the private as well as the public sector. She said that Green Office also promotes climate change mitigation by requiring energy saving and use of renewable energy sources.
She cited the examples of various organizations which have adopted this program and save considerable cost in energy and material expenses like Packages Limited and Engro Industries have reduced the consumption of electricity by 14percent and 11percent respectively while Qarshi Industries has reduced the consumption of paper by 46percent by adopting Green Office Initiative practices.
Mrs.Lubna Farooq said that WWF aims to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which human’s lives in harmony with nature by promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption. She said that the Green Office diploma and logo is awarded to the offices that fulfill the minimum Green Office requirements and pass the WWF audit.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Zafar Bakhtawari, President ICCI appreciated the Green Office Initiative program and said that this program would definitely provides help in maintaining our high standards as responsible stewards of the environment for future generation.
ICCI President said that all available resources should be used to develop Islamabad as a clean, green and environment friendly city. He said that there is greater need to involve school children in tree plantation campaign because tree plantation is not a onetime activity, rather it is a long term healthy and environment friendly activity as the children feel ownership with the trees they plant and see them growing.
He said that all the organization should adopt these Green Office practices as there is greater need to gain a better understanding of the environmental impacts of business activities and build awareness of environmental concerns among employees.
ICCI president said that the total estimated generation of solid waste in Islamabad is 600–700 tons per day and still there is no permanent site to dump the city’s garbage to comply with slogan of ‘Clean and Green Islamabad.’ He proposed to establish proper treatment plants for converting these wastes into bio-fuel which would ultimately overcome the prevailing energy crisis of the country.
