Islamabad, November 05, 2012 (PPI-OT): Deputy Speaker National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi has underlined the importance of democratic system and said that democracy will be meaningful when it is participatory and the fruits of benefits of democracy reached to the people in shape of maintaining and protecting fundamental rights and rule of law in the state.
He said this while addressing at the discussion on the subject “Meaningful Participatory Democracy in South Asia-Parliament’s Affirmative Actions” on the eve of 3rd day of 6th Conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians 2012.
Deputy Speaker said in his speech that Pakistan is honoured to host the Distinguished Delegates attending the 6th conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians.
He emphasized that the SAARC Parliaments initiatives for meaningful contributions in the decision making are of vital importance for the people of South Asia. Since Parliaments have the requisite powers and means to express the will of the people through its law-making and oversight and advocacy functions therefore, we believe Parliaments can contribute effectively to guaranteeing the people’s rights and liberties, securing civil peace and ensuring harmonious development, he added.
He said that the relationship between the parliament and democracy can only be cemented with the active participation of the people and this relationship cannot be built in isolation. Parliament is a central institution through which the will of the people is expressed and which will only be expressed when the legislatures and legislators take initiatives to reach out to them and maintain the close bond between the people and their representatives, he maintained.
He informed that our problems are not ordinary in nature and we are facing common challenges of terrorism, extremism, mass poverty, unemployment, lack of adequate health care, illiteracy, governance, and environmental degradation, adding that we can overcome these problems with a strengthened and collective democratic approach.
He stressed that time has arrived for us to act now and express the will of our people in more meaningful ways. Modern technology has enabled the remotest masses to contribute their views on a given agenda, he added.
He hoped that our endeavoured to achieve meaningful and participatory democracy in the South Asia and deliberations in this the conference will prove to be rewarding.
