Lahore, November 26, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry Monday took a strong exception to the plans being evolved by the Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation Inland Revenue of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to raid the production premises/offices of ghee and cooking oil industry for getting tax record for recovery of evaded amount of Sales Tax.
The LCCI has urged the Chairman FBR to take notice of the situation as it could create an atmosphere of harassment besides opening up of doors of corruption.
In a statement issued here Monday, LCCI President Ijaz A. Mumtaz, Senior Vice President Mian Nauman Kabir and Vice President Syed Mahmood Ghaznavi said that LCCI has received a number of complains that Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation Inland Revenue of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is planning to raid the production premises/offices of ghee and cooking oil industry for getting tax record.
The LCCI office-bearers said that all the leading economies were giving incentives to expedite economic activities in their respective countries but in Pakistan the people who are sitting at the helm of affairs were doing the otherwise at this point in time when almost all the businesses were facing a number of internal and external pressures.
They said that it was very unfortunate that despite clear direction of the Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif, the bureaucracy is creating troubles for the businessmen who are backbone of the economy.
They said that the private sector was ready to supplement all government efforts aimed at revival of economic activities in the country if they are provided breathing space but in the presence of such anti business tactics, it would be very difficult for the private sector to continue with their businesses.
They said that the days are gone when tax collection was made through physical visits, now the people are quite conscious of their national obligations and the decision to send tax officials to ghee and cooking oil manufacturing units would only create hurdles in the smooth working of industrial entity.
They urged Federal Finance Minister and Chairman FBR should take notice of the situation and stop the Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation officials from creating an atmosphere of harassment by conducting raids on production premises/offices of ghee and cooking oil industry.
