Islamabad: The 9th Meeting of Malaysia – Pakistan Joint Committee on Defence Cooperation (JCDC) was held in Kuala Lumpur today. Pakistan side was led by Secretary, Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen (Retd) Syed Athar Ali while Dato’ Sri Dr. Haji Ismail bin Haji Ahmad, Secretary General, Ministry of Defence headed the Malaysian delegation. Two parallel meetings of Malaysian-Pakistan Sub Committee for Military Cooperation and Malaysian-Pakistan Sub-Committee on Defence Services Technology and Industry Cooperation were also held.
Both sides reviewed the progress in bilateral defence cooperation and agreed that there was further scope for its expansion in mutually identified fields. Some new ideas were explored in this regard.
In his opening remarks, Lt. Gen (Retd) Syed Athar Ali stated that Pakistan and Malaysia enjoy close and cooperative relations with each other at international fora. The cooperation between the armed forces of Malaysia and Pakistan is longstanding and entails exchanges, participation in exercises and training programmes, which are to the mutual advantage of both sides. He expressed hope that the JCDC meeting will pave the way for further strengthening of this collaboration.
Pakistan side made a presentation on its role as a frontline state in the war on terror, recounting innumerable sacrifices given by the valiant armed forces and brave people of Pakistan.
The Secretary General, Ministry of Defence of Malaysia acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution in combating terrorism and militancy. He also appreciated recent initiatives by Pakistan to promote peace and stability in the region. A presentation was made by the Malaysian side on Malaysia’s contribution to the capacity building and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.
