Karachi, March 05, 2014 (PPI-OT): A high level meeting has taken place in Karachi Port Trust which was chaired by the Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Senator Kamran Michael along with theSecretary Ports and Shipping, Mr. Habibullah Khan Khattak. The meeting was attended by Director General Ports and Shipping, Chairman PNSC, Chairman PQA and Chairman KPT.
During the briefing, power production through coal is looked at with special inference on improving handling of coal imports with their storage and transportation have also come under discussion. The Minister was informed about fixation of three berths exclusively for coal handling at Karachi Port is made which will be transported to power houses through railway bogeys. He was also informed that the terminal facilities are upgraded and that the handling and transportation of cargo will be possible round the clock (i.e. 24 hours).
In continuation to the signing of agreements by Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for coal fired power plants, preparations have geared up at ports with special directions to become responsible for speedy port operations. Energy Coordinator to Chief Minister Punjab, Mr. Nadeem Aslam Choudhry, has exclusively attended the said meeting in this regard.
The Minister was further briefed about the mega projects of KPT like Pakistan Deep Water Container Port, Harbour Crossing Bridge and Cargo Village during the meeting. Later, the Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Senator Kamran Michael along with the Coordinator on Energy, Chief Minister Office, Punjab, Mr. Nadeem Aslam Choudhry, were taken on harbour cruise to witness the coal handling facilities of KPT which concluded the proceedings of the day.
