Islamabad, March 08, 2016 (PPI-OT):Standing Committee on Water and Power met under the Chairmanship of Muhammad Arshad Khan Leghari, MNA to discuss the following agenda:
i) Confirmation of minutes of the meeting held on 29-12-2015
ii) Discussion on the point of order raised by Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Leader of the Opposition regarding theft of electricity in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the House; and
iii) Any other item with the permission of the Chair.
The Committee appreciated the efforts of the Ministry to reduce the circular debt from Rs. 188 to Rs. 40 Billion during last 3 years. Mr. Omer Rasool, Additional Secretary informed the Committee that due to constant financial review of distribution companies by the ministry, resultantly the receipts from distribution companies increased, due to which the gap of circular debt was reduced to Rs. 40.5 billion.
The Committee was briefly apprised by the Ministry about the theft of electricity in all DISCO’s of Punjab, Sindh and KPK and informed that efforts were underway by improving the infrastructure and disciplinary actions have also been taken against the officials involved in theft of electricity.
The Committee was informed that Solar, Wind, Hydel and Terbella-IV power projects have been initiated to overcome the shortfall of the electricity which would be completed by the end of 2016. While briefing about the line losses the Ministry informed that most of the Transmission Lines were in deteriorated condition and needs to be updated which would be helpful to reduce the line losses of the system.
