Islamabad, November 13, 2014 (PPI-OT): National Highway Authority’s Member Operations Arshad Mahmood Chaudhary has said that NHA aims to make its contribution in economic uplift of the country through ensuring a durable and extensive network of highways and motorways in the country. The NHA’s priorities include up-gradation of existing network, extension of National Trade Corridor, construction of new road network, and motorways through a comprehensive policy, the Member Operations said.
He expressed these while addressing the Public Stake Holders Consultative Conference here in Lahore today as the Chief Guest. The Members Operations said that preparations for the construction of Karachi-Lahore Motorways are in final stages whereas Pak-China Economic Corridor is a landmark achievement of the present democratic government, and NHA is working to expand and up-grade the country’s road network and basic infrastructure in accordance with the development vision of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
Arshad Mahmood Chaudhary added that NHA’s road network caters to the needs of 80% of commercial traffic of the country and Rs. 117,624 million have been spent on its expansion and maintenance this year whereas an additional Rs. 24.744 million will be spent on the network’s renovation.
The Stake Holders Consultative Conference was also attended by GM Punjab Murtaza Qandahari, GM Construction Punjab Naveed Iqbal Wahla, GM Motorways M-2 and M-3 Naseem Khattak, GM Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Abdul Samad Khan, Director RAMS Ikram-us-Saqlain Haider, Director Maintenance Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sajid, Members of civil society, representatives of chamber of commerce.
Member Operations said that Pakistan is willing to provide trade corridor to its neighboring countries that will boost trade, tourism, industry and agriculture of the region, whereas at Pakistan level, the integration of remote areas with national mainstream will bring prosperity to its people and will serve to promote inter-provincial harmony, he added.
Arshad Mahmood Chaudhary said that due to NHA’s network travel time from one end of the country to the other has minimized from 72 hours to 36 hours whereas transport and tourism sectors have also witnessed great improvement.
Representatives of transport, civil society and trade bodies also presented their recommendations in the conference that were agreed to be included in NHA’s Annual Maintenance Program. The conference also discussed recommendations to overcome problems relating to environment and overloading on the road network.
