Karachi, November 21, 2012 (PPI-OT): KMC Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said Orangi and Gujjar Nullah were among the major drains of the city and the construction of bridge on these Nullahs was aimed at improving traffic flow and developing the basic infrastructure. Bridge on Orangi and Gujjar Nullah will complete by the end of December.
He said this while addressing a review meeting on these development projects which was attended by Director General Technical Services Altaf G. Memon, Senior Director Transport and Communication Muhammad Ather, project directors and other concerned officers.
In a briefing on this occasion Administrator Karachi was informed that the Orangi Nullah Bridge had a length of 75 meter with 9.5 meter width and this bridge would cost Rs98million. After its construction the people from various surrounding areas including Orangi Town, SITE, Metroville, Baldia Town, Shershah, Mauripur and Hawkesbay would facilitate. Administrator Karachi directed to remove the encroachments from Orangi Nullah Bridge and carry out repairing on the old portion of the bridge.
The meeting was informed that the Gujjar Nullah Bridge would now consist of 6 lanes instead of 4 and completion of this bridge would make the whole corridor from Sharea Faisal to Siemens Roundabout signal free.
Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed directed concerned officers to make sure good quality with speedy work on these projects so that these could prove durable and beneficial for a long time. He said the presence of encroachments on the edges of major city drains was an important issue and therefore measures were being taken to get to a solution of this problem.
The overflow condition of city drains caused immense difficulties to people during rainy season in past and the surrounding areas were still facing this condition which needs to be improved on an urgent basis. He said though KMC and town administration perform the cleaning of all small and big city drains the citizens should also refrain from dumping their domestic garbage and construction waste in drains.
