Islamabad, May 17, 2012 (PPI-OT): Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Syed Samsam Ali Bukhari has reiterated PPP government’s commitment to further strengthen Radio Pakistan as envisioned by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and provide necessary resources to the national organisation.
He was speaking as chief guest at 35th anniversary of the establishment of Radio Pakistan Islamabad here at National Broadcasting House on Thursday. PBC Director General Murtaza Solangi presided over the ceremony.
At the beginning of the ceremony‚ excerpts from the speech of the then President Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto‚ which he delivered while laying foundation stone of National Broadcasting House on April 27‚ 1972‚ were played.
In his speech‚ Shaheed Bhutto highlighted the importance as well as very objectives of Radio Pakistan as a national organization. He said as a medium of the people‚ Radio Pakistan has greater responsibility to educate and entertain the masses and keep them informed of developments taking place in the country and outside world.
The minister said his government will never let the red tapism and bureaucratic tactics to impede the way of resolving the difficulties of this national organization. The PPP government wants to revive the old golden era of Radio Pakistan and for this purpose‚ President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Murtaza Solangi as its head.
He assured that the government will not take Radio Pakistan as a commercial or earning organization because it is public broadcaster serving the nation round the clock.
Samsam Bukhari said in spite of the latest development in the media world‚ Radio Pakistan continues to play a leading role in providing information‚ education‚ and entertainment to the masses. He said despite the fact that there are a large number of TV channels in the United States‚ Radio enjoys more importance even in the world’s most developed country.
Radio Pakistan is listened to even in the far-flung and farthest areas of the country like Siachen‚ Mithi and Rann of Kach as well as the people on roads‚ farmers in fields and the women at home‚ he added.
Referring to regularization of the services of 661 daily wagers in Radio Pakistan‚ he said the PPP government always provides jobs to the people‚ but those politicians having huge business empires are always bent upon snatching even the stale bread from the poor masses.
Syed Samsam Bukhari said the PPP workers and leaders safeguarded the philosophy of its leaders‚ including Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto‚ by sacrificing their lives. “We want to change the very system in the country with the fragrance of the blood of our martyrs‚” he vowed.
He said Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was symbol of federation‚ but the cruel elements broke that symbol by martyring her‚ which weakened the very federation. Now President Asif Ali Zardari is toeing her line of strengthen the country by giving the slogan‚ “Pakistan Khapay.”
He said the PPP will always work for the freedom of expression and the anchors‚ who are criticizing the government these days‚ will be rescued only by the PPP if they face any trouble tomorrow.
He regretted that certain autocratic and fascist forces are still conspiring against democracy and pushing the country toward a 1971-like situation. However‚ the PPP‚ with the support of the masses‚ will foil all such plots against the motherland‚ he vowed.
He said the PPP believes in respecting the judiciary. “I challenge that no one else has rendered as many sacrifices as the PPP workers did for the cause of independent judiciary‚” he said.
Earlier‚ Murtaza Solangi said that Radio Pakistan is swiftly becoming a multi-media company from the old analog organization. He said Radio Pakistan has 66‚000 minutes of speeches and interviews of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in digital form. He informed that in spite of attempts during Martial Law era of Gen Ziaul Haq‚ Radio Pakistan workers risked their jobs and protected this treasure.
He said Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had set forth the very objectives of Radio Pakistan while laying the foundation stone of National Broadcasting House in Islamabad on April 27‚ 1972. In a prophetic way‚ Bhutto stated that Radio Pakistan’s important role in the society will never decrease‚ Solangi recalled. He said Mr Bhutto converted Radio Pakistan into a corporation and provided it constitutional protection through PBC Act 1973.
He said Radio Pakistan has signed an agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency for installing a state of the art 500 KW medium wave transmitter at Faqirabad in Attock District‚ which will boost medium wave transmission of the organization in the country. After completion of the project‚ Radio Pakistan’s medium wave transmission will cover almost all parts of the country during the nighttime.
Veteran journalist and broadcaster Zameer Nafis and Fakhar-e-Alam Nomani shared their experiences with the audience. They lauded the efforts of the government as well as incumbent director general to transform Radio Pakistan into a dynamic‚ vibrant‚ and active public broadcaster.
Later‚ the minister announced a cash award of Rs.100‚000 for Fakhar-e-Alam Nomani‚ a retired producer of Radio Pakistan‚ for protecting the archives containing speeches of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto during Zia era. Mr Nomani thanked the minister and announced to donate the amount to the organization’s CBA union.
