Karachi, May 23, 2012 (PPI-OT): Istanbul based Turkish firm would provide technical assistance for bringing improvement in the solid waste management system for Karachi. An Memorandum of Understanding was signed in this connection by KMC Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed and Chairman Board of Directors Gunes Albayrak Turizm, Construction and Waste Management Company during a ceremony held in Islamabad.
Under the MoU the Turkish firm will provide technical assistance to KMC for preparation of a feasibility study towards the objective of an overall improvement of solid waste management system in Karachi.
This feasibility will highlight the technical issues, including the matters relating to institutional and system weaknesses that need to be addressed for a more robust and effective solid waste management system. The feasibility will bring out matters relating to financial viability and sustainable operations other than the entire system strengthening.
Based on the findings of the feasibility and under the technical assistance so arranged, required legal and other documentation will be prepared including bidding documents and draft of contractual documents for hiring of services required for the execution of proposed solutions in light of outcomes derived in feasibility study through International Competitive Bidding(ICB).
The Government of Sindh will facilitate and monitor the progress attained under the MoU towards the objective of improving solid waste management system in Karachi while the KMC will facilitate, assist and help for obtaining required sanctions, permission and approval for the company in connection with the smooth implementation and completion of the project.
On this occasion, Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said Karachi Metropolitan Corporation together with the five district municipal corporations handling solid waste management of approximately 10,000 Metric tons per day generate by the metropolis of over 18 million people.
He said though KMC had continued to make efforts at system’s improvement, however, given the size and complexity of the portfolio this sector was facing multiple challenges. The Government of Sindh and KMC have recognized the need for a clean environment and were keen to upgrade the quality of municipal services.
The signing of MoU with the Turkish Company was aimed at making Karachi’s Solid Waste Management System effective and hurdle free.
