Prime Minister Expresses Dissatisfaction on IT Task Force’s Performance

February 17, 2021     Comment Closed     Industry

In a meeting last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed his dissatisfaction over the slow progress made by the Information Technology Task Force in the telecom sector in over two years.

The IT Task Force had been approved by the Federal Cabinet on October 5, 2018, with the Minister for IT and Telecom as the chair. It was assigned the tasks of advising on policy changes and developing strategic plans with TORs to strengthen the technology ecosystem in Pakistan.

These included suggesting concrete measures, programs, and incentives to enhance IT/IT-enabled services exports substantially over the next five years and identify measures to encourage proper reporting of IT export remittances.

According to a news report by Express Tribune, the PM was annoyed at the delay in preparation of the terms of reference (TORs) since no concrete progress had been made except for one TOR out of all assigned targets, despite the lapse of more than two years.

During the same meeting, Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry, asked about the stability of the internet network in Islamabad. The Education Minister, also present at the meeting, underlined the need for developing IT facilities to promote online education and for stable internet connections.

In response, the Prime Minister directed the task force chairman to hold weekly meetings with him to speed up work on the tasks assigned to it.

The cabinet also directed the task force chairman to revisit the presentation while ensuring updates on each of the TORs.
