Islamabad, March 10, 2014 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif visited Mithi today, the drought-hit capital of Tharparkar, Sindh to personally monitor the relief operation and announced Rs. One billion package for the affected people.
Prime Minister said the government would help the people affected by the calamity and assured that the federal government would provide full assistance. He directed to ensure swift provision of edible commodities, drinking water and medicine to the people. Prime Minister said, strict action should be taken against those responsible for the negligence in distribution of wheat amongst the residents of Tharparkar.
PM stressed upon devising proper strategy and planning to prevent such situations in future. PM expressed reservations as to why the situation in Tharparkar deteriorated as compared to the adjoining Cholistan desert.
The Deputy Commissioner Tharparkar in a briefing said the Sindh government had distributed 1, 25,000 wheat bags among the residents of six talukas of Tharparkar and 2030 bags had so far been distributed in Mithi, while as 1,030 had been given away in Islamkot. He said the wheat can be obtained from Help Centres by showing identity card. Deputy Commissioner further briefed that 15 veterinary mobile teams were also reaching out to vaccinate the livestock, particularly sheep.
Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah thanked the Prime Minister for taking emergency relief measures for the affected people. He said the area of Tharparkar was quite vast with little means of transportation. He said the women doctors deputed in the area would be given double salaries and free transportation as incentives.
Chairman Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed, Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar, Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon and MNA Marvi Memon also attended the briefing.
Earlier, Prime Minister visited the District Hospital Mithi and enquired about the health of drought affected people undergoing treatment at the hospital.
