Islamabad, September 10, 2015 (PPI-OT): Mrs. Saira Afzal Tarar, Minister of State for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination held a meeting with Ms. Mary Wakefield, Acting Deputy Secretary at the US Department of Health and Human Services at Washington DC on Sep 9, 2015.
Both sides discussed Pak-U.S. bilateral cooperation in the health sector and agreed on strengthening the relationship in this area. Mrs. Tarar and Ms. Wakefield exchanged views on the shared goals of both countries for improving public health and as how this enhanced cooperation could benefit the people of Pakistan.
Mrs. Tarar briefed her counterpart on the health-related initiatives and policies of the Government of Pakistan, including the strides made in overcoming the challenge of polio, which were appreciated by the U.S. side.
While agreeing on the significance of strengthening institutional linkages, with particular reference to the public sector, they also agreed to step up cooperation in health- related research institutions and capacity building of researchers and medical practitioners. The Minister of Health invited Ms. Wakefield to Pakistan to further discussions in the health sector. The U.S. side expressed it’s willingness to help develop Pakistan’s health related public infrastructure.
