Substation burnt, engineer kidnapped

Web Desk June 6, 2011     No Comment     Miscellaneous

Karachi: The Karachi Electric Supply Company has expressed great alarm over the fire incident in a substation in Lyari and said that the union miscreants were destroying the City’s electricity network which was in no one’s interest.

The technical factors of the burnt substation had clearly established the fact that it was an act of sabotage by internal elements. The KESC understands that it was not just a loss to the utility but to the City in special and the country in general.

The Lyari Telephone Exchange Sub-Station was burnt by union miscreants on June 5. During investigation it was confirmed to be a case of sabotage. The oil was found seeping from the drain plug of the transformer which is only possible if the drain plug is deliberately opened or let loose. The upper gasket of the transformer was found to be dry which is the normal course of oil spillage in case of natural overheat. Being a single room substation, the fire then spread damaging the low tension cables, low tension panel and high tension switch. The low tension cable from the substation to the overhead pole was also found to be burnt, which shows a deliberate act as there is no continuity in the low tension cable to the overhead line.

Early Monday morning, an assistant engineer Mr. Tahir was kidnapped by union activists along with his motorbike while working on the operational work of the tripped feeder of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. The miscreants took him to some place near Kalapul and tortured him as a “punishment” for still continuing his work and disobeying the union’s call for strike. He was released after about six hours of torture but the kidnappers snatched his personal motorbike. He was also threatened of life risk in case of reporting the matter to police.
