Terrorist involved in damaging NATO oil tankers arrested from Islamabad

Islamabad: Islamabad Police have arrested a terrorist and close aide of group involved in damaging NATO oil containers besides recovering four kilogram explosive material, two hand grenades from him, a police spokesman said here Sunday.

Following the directions of IGP Islamabad Wajid Ali Khan Durrani and DIG (Operations) Bani Amin for effective measures against mischievous elements, SSP Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan ordered all the police officials to maintain high vigilance in their respective areas. On this high alert situation, Islamabad police obtained an information that a person involved in damaging NATO containers is coming to Islamabad from tribal belt along with explosive material with him. It was also informed that he may target some sensitive location in the city and indulge in terrorism activities here.

On the basis of this information, he said special police team of Sabzi Mandi Police Islamabad including SHO Inspector Ghulam Muhammad Baqir, Sub-Inspector Asjad Mehmud and others maintained high alert and arrested a person from IJ Principal road in possession of four kilogram explosive material and two hand grenades. Bomb Disposal Squad was called immediately to defuse the grenades and police shifted him to police station. He was identified as Ashraf Jonu alias Master Abid, Ibrahim resident of village Mir Muhammad Janu, Post office Tehsil Qazi Ahmed District Nawab Shah. It was revealed during the initial investigation that he had got training of preparing explosive circuit and setting its time from a place in Afghanistan.

He said that he obtained his education till Intermediate and had served as teacher for more than 13 years. In 1996, he along with a person Ghulam Mustafa Qureshi, an activist of banned outfit, hailing from Nawab Shah collected different types of donations for Taliban. He had also contacts with a Taliban leader Ameer Abdul Salam and visited Hilmand, the province of Afghanistan in 2007. He also remained in contact with Taliban Commander Maulvi Khalil in Afghanistan and damaged the NATO oil tankers near Mastung, Mach and Chaman along with his other accomplices who hail from Lahore, Quetta, Miran Shah, Muzaffarabad, Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

IGP Islamabad Wajid Ali Khan Durrani said that Islamabad Police have put the security as well as vigilance on high alert in the city and making every possible effort to ensure protection to the lives and property of the citizens. He also appealed the citizens to inform police immediately after observing any suspect around them.

DIG (Operations) Bani Amin Khan has said that around 125 terrorists have been arrested by Islamabad police and endeavours will remain continue with the cooperation of community to foil the nefarious designs of mischievous elements.
