Islamabad: Mr. Akhlaq Ahmed Tarar, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan, chaired the 2nd Joint Meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Committee (IMCC) and Organizing Committee for holding the upcoming 2nd Commission Meeting of the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) to be held on 16-17 April 2012. Hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan, the 2nd Commission Meeting of COMSATS is being convened by its Chairperson, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani, at the level of Ministers nominated by the Heads of State/Government. The Meeting is expected to be attended by more than 12 country-delegations from member countries, 2 heads of inter-governmental organizations; and Islamabad-based officials of 12 international organizations, as well as foreign missions of COMSATS’ member countries.
The Commission is the highest forum of COMSATS, with membership of the Heads of 21 member States/Governments. The 2nd Commission Meeting is being held with the objectives, inter alia, of: renewing the commitment of the member countries for achieving the objectives of COMSATS; working out solid policy guidelines for the future functioning of the Commission; sensitizing the member states/governments and institutions of COMSATS towards the importance of South-South and North-South cooperation in S and T; and mobilizing adequate financial support for the scientific and technical programmes of COMSATS.
The 2nd Joint Meeting of the IMCC and the Organizing Committee was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology, COMSATS Secretariat, Islamabad, and the members (or their representatives) of the two Committees. The purpose of the joint meeting was to review the progress of the 2 Committees and the 8 sub-committees, especially constituted to organize the Commission Meeting.
Showing his satisfaction over the arrangements made so far, the Federal Secretary asserted the need to finalize all arrangements within one week. The Executive Director COMSATS expressed gratitude towards all the Ministries and Government Departments, especially the Ministry of Science and Technology, which is the official host of the Commission Meeting.
The 8 sub-committees of the Organizing Committee pertain to: Main Coordination; Agenda and Programme; Boarding and Lodging and Medical and Security Issues; Media and Publicity; Protocol, Logistics and Recreation; Administrative and Financial Matters; Venue Arrangements; and Inauguration Arrangements. As done in the first joint meeting, progress reports of these sub-committees were presented by their conveners, in the light of which decisions were made to timely and suitably conclude the preparatory matters for the Commission Meeting.
