Islamabad: The Norwegian Embassy joined in the opening of the week-long Snow Festival in Swat, starting Saturday 3 March. It was an unforgettable experience, both because of the great fun of joining the people of Swat in enjoying the snow, but also because of the magnificent beauty of the area.
This is the second time that the Swat Snow festival was arranged, but the first time that a large effort was made to introduce the mountains in Swat in wintertime to the nation and the world. Good media coverage made this possible. It was a beautiful sunny day, where children and youngsters from Swat demonstrated how they could use the facilities, both skiing, paragliding, building snowmen and simply gliding down the snowy hills on whatever they had available.
The people of Swat have lived through many tough years, and they want to look to the future. They have everything to offer visitors: Beauty, hospitality and a paradise for trekkers and snow-lovers. Swat could show us a perfect skiing slope, but with the need for further development. The military has installed a provisional ski lift, but a more professional lift is badly needed. The remains of the hotel at the bottom of the slope that was bombed in 2007, are still there.
The staff at the Norwegian embassy had a great time, and they were grateful for everything that was done to make this an unforgettable experience. No doubt, we will be back, – also to see the beauty of this part of Pakistan in spring. It is a paradise!
