Islamabad: 1. A delegation of UNDP, headed by Mr. Toshihiro Tanaka, Country Director, UNDP called on the Hon’ble Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice ® Hamid Ali Mirza and the Secretary, ECP, Mr. Ishtiak Ahmad Khan in the Election Commission of Pakistan Secretariat, Islamabad. UN Electoral specialist Mr. Peter Eicher, Mr. Ricardo Alejandro and Azhar Malik of UNDP and Mr. Muhammad Afzal Khan, Joint Secretary, ECP/Focal Person for Donor Organizations were also present in the meeting.
2- The Secretary, ECP briefed the delegation about the ECP’s Strategic Plan 2010-14 and highlighted 15 goals and 129 objectives set by the ECP in the said Plan. The Secretary informed that the IFES has provided technical assistance for implementation of ECP’s Strategic Plan; however, the ECP requires further assistance to complete the following remaining important activities:
The ECP has entered in the last stage of preparation of accurate, error-free computerized Electoral Rolls in collaboration with NADRA and door-to-door verification exercise will be started on 8th August 2011 which will continue till 17th September 2011 and assistance is required for voter’s awareness during voter registration process especially.
Translation of different election laws into Urdu,
The ECP intends to appoint Federal and Provincial executive officers and a pool of 4000 officers have been prepared by the ECP wherein only 1000 officers will be trained as Returning Officers and the ECP will require assistance for the training of Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officers and other polling personnel.
Installation of CCTV, security systems in sensitive polling stations/ Training for Police and Polling Staff on polling duties.
4- Mr. Peter Eicher appreciated the ECP’s open policy and consultation with all the stake holders i-e Political Parties, Civil Society Organizations, media etc. through consultative meetings and assured that the UN will extend support to the ECP for making electoral process transparent and strengthening democratic process in Pakistan.
