Islamabad: UN Women is the women’s fund at the United Nations. Established in 1976, it provides financial and technical assistance to innovative approaches aimed at fostering women’s empowerment and gender equality. Today the organization’s work touches the lives of women and girls in more than 100 countries. UN Women also helps make the voices of women heard at the United Nations — to highlight critical issues and advocate for the implementation of existing commitments made to women.
UN Women Pakistan supports the Government of Pakistan in fulfilling its national and international commitments on Gender Equality. Placing the realization of women’s human rights and security at the centre of all of its efforts, UN Women focuses its attention on women’s protection, prevention and participation concerns as per the Government of Pakistan’s priorities defined in the National Plan of Action and the National Policy on Development and Empowerment of Women.
UN Women Pakistan is committed to ensuring that women and girls are able to participate in the post-crisis rehabilitation and re-settlement processes, whilst remaining protected from any vulnerability or incidents of violence. UN Women support Pakistan in the implementation of CEDAW and other international commitment like WHR and IHL to ensure the needs of Women and Girls are also properly addressed at all levels; be it development, humanitarian response or early recovery.
UN Women Pakistan programme has been part of UN system for humanitarian response since 2009 and has been actively supporting integration of GE and women’s empowerment concerns in the UN ‘cluster’ approach strategy. UN Women has assisted in the coordination of gender sub-cluster meetings, input into the Malakand development strategy, CERINA, PCNA and other cluster documents. Besides leading the Gender Task force to support the humanitarian country team (HCT) for integrating, mainstreaming gender equality in the humanitarian response and is now actively involved in supporting the Government on its early recovery plan and its implementation.
