Islamabad: The meeting of UNODC Programme Governance Committee was held under the chairmanship of Secretary Narcotics Control, Iftikhar Ahmad on Tuesday at Ministry of Narcotics Control. The representatives from Ministry of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Law and Justice, Health, Commerce, Statistics Division and Nation of Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) participated to view the implementation of country programme.
Federal Secretary, Narcotics Control Division, Iftikhar Ahmad informed the participant that UNODC Country Programme is a joint effort of Ministry of Narcotics Control and United Nation Office of Drugs and Crime .To view the performance of meeting a mechanism has been created and UNODC Programme Governance Committee was established which holds its meeting twice a year. He also informed that this programme deals in three areas –border management, criminal Justice and Drug Demand Reduction.
While discussing the performance of this programme, Mr. Jeremy Douglas, Country head of UNODC in Pakistan said that in the area of Border management, Border Liaison Office was opened at Torkham in February 2011, linkages of Government of Pakistan with International and regional actors through study tours, conferences and meetings have been strengthens, also counter –trafficking training to law enforcement agencies have been provided.
In area of criminal justice, the assistance was provided to law enforcement agencies in flood affected areas, training was imparted to officials of Law Enforcement Agencies. In area of drug demand reduction joint UNODC and WHO drug treatment programme has been launched and National survey of Drug use is being prepared. It was informed in the meeting that UNODC would provide state of the art equipment worth of one billion to Anti Narcotics Force during this week.
