Islamabad, March 06, 2014 (PPI-OT): A group of 27 students of Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute Rawalpindi, accompanied by 3 faculty members visited National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for the better understanding and to familiarize with organizations involved in disaster management and their collaborative working.
Member Operations NDMA, Brig Mirza Kamran Zia welcomed the guest participants and briefed them on the role and mandate of NDMA which serves as policy formulating, coordinating, implementing and monitoring body for disaster response and risk reduction and management at the national level.
He apprised the students about the necessary steps undertaken and measures adopted by NDMA to facilitate an effective relief, rescue and rehabilitation initiatives in the event of disaster. He also highlighted the efforts/measures undertaken at Federal and Regional levels to manage disasters and also shared with the group valuable lessons learnt during the process.
Highlighting the future course of action he briefed that NDMA has shifted focus from Reactive to Pro-active policies and also formulated National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy and ten National Disaster Management Plan that envisages ten disaster management priority areas to be implemented over with emphasis on Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction into Development.
Chairman NDMA, Major General M. Saeed Aleem also interacted with the students and explained NDMA’s initiatives on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and creating awareness/ among communities for establishment of comprehensive and proactive Disaster Management System within the country.
The briefing was followed by a question and answer session. The faculty members appreciated role of NDMA, in formulation of policies and handling of challenges posed by various environmental conditions in the country and also for arranging a valuable and informative study tour and thanked Chairman NDMA for apprising them in detail on the Disaster Management Initiatives in Pakistan.
