Islamabad: Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan, Federal Minister for Communications arrived Dushanbe on 07 August 2011 on a three-day official visit. He is accompanied by Mr. Sabir Hassan, Member (Planning), National Highway Authority.
The Minister for Communications had in-depth discussions with Tajik Minister of Transport, Mr. Hakimov Nizom, regarding air and surface connectivity between Pakistan and Tajikistan and regional road and rail corridors.
The two Ministers agreed that for the promotion of people-to-people contacts, trade and tourism, connectivity between the two countries was of utmost importance. In the short term, the two countries should establish air link and in the long-term, there should be a direct surface link. The road link had strategic value for the region.
The day long discussions resulted in reaching an agreement on the route that was considered to be the most appropriate, feasible, safe and economical. Both sides had done some preparatory work on the route between Pakistan and Tajikistan and they agreed to further work on this route.
During his stay in Tajikistan, Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan is to meet Tajik Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov and Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi. Issues of enhancing people-to-people contacts, further liberalization of visa regime for genuine businessmen and bilateral and regional frameworks for facilitation of rail and road corridors will be the focus of these meetings.
