Islamabad: Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aslam Khan, Advisor to the Punjab Government, and Head of the Department of Human Genetics and Molecular Biology at the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore visited the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Head Office in Karachi on March 5, 2012 to create awareness among members of the business community about the spread of infectious diseases.
Dr. Khan was welcomed by Mr. Siddique Sheikh, Chairman, of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee at FPCCI, who thanked him for visiting FPCCI, and expressed satisfaction that the programme was well-attended by stakeholders from health, education, community service and sports sectors. While stressing the importance of health to ensuring the progress and prosperity of Pakistan, Mr. Sheikh stated that events such as these were crucial to spreading greater awareness about preventing the outbreak of epidemics of the kind that we have witnessed in the recent past. He introduced Dr. Khan to the audience, mentioning in particular his experience of working very actively with the Punjab Government in controlling the recent spread of dengue fever in the province.
Before commencing his presentation, Dr. Khan informed the audience that he was visiting Karachi from March 4-7 to meet members of the civil society, educationists, and government officials to create awareness about how to address the issue of outbreaks of dengue, malaria and other insect-borne diseases.
He expressed the hope that the presentation would be useful in learning how to protect Karachi from infectious diseases through pre-emptive measures to ward off apprehension of eruption of mosquitoes and the resultant insect borne diseases in future.
He then proceeded to make a detailed presentation about the types of mosquitoes found in Pakistan, common breeding sites of mosquitoes at both home and the workplace, and how to prevent the spread of mosquitoes and their larvae. The presentation was followed by an informative question and answer session, wherein Dr. Khan addressed queries raised by the participants about insect-borne diseases.
