White Cane Safety Day being observed today

White Cane Safety Day is being observed across the globe today (Saturday).

The day is marked every year to highlight the achievements and importance of visually impaired people in the world.

Meanwhile, a walk on the eve of White Cane Safety Day was organized by the Directorate General of Special Education (DGSE) of Ministry of Human Rights in Islamabad to support visually impaired people.

Visually impaired children, men, women and people from different walks of life participated in the walk.

Talking to Radio Pakistan’s Correspondent Haider Baloch Director General of Ministry of Human Rights Abdul Sattar said the white canes play an important role in facilitating visually impaired people.

Abdul Sattar called for protecting rights of white cane holders.

He stressed civil society extend help to visually impaired and bring smoothness in their mobility. He reiterated the resolve to implement laws conceived to facilitate special children.

In his remarks, Director General Special Education Sheikh Azhar Sajjad said visually impaired people have proved their talent in the country and the world at large.

He said it is the responsibility of the society to make visually impaired people independent and white cane is a symbol of their independence.

The Director General Special Education expressed his gratitude to civil society, district administration and police for facilitating the walk.

Talking to Radio Pakistan’s correspondent, renowned actress Laila Zuberi said that the purpose of the White Cane Safety Day is to create awareness among the masses regarding rights of white cane holders.

She said it is the responsibility of government and non-government institutions to fully exploit the abilities of visually impaired individuals and make them an active part of the society. She called for providing special opportunities to visually impaired people to polish their skills. 

Expressing their views, visually impaired children asked the society to provide them equal opportunities. Students of fifth class Zainab and Alishba from National Special Education Center also sang a special “Tarana” highlighting the importance of white cane.
